Porcelain or sandstone, know the difference

Porcelain is man-made, dense, and near enough frost-proof, so it suits exposed Warwickshire gardens well. Sandstone is quarried natural stone, warmer in colour, a bit more character to it. Sandstone needs sealing and proper drainage bedding or it stains and lifts. Porcelain forgives a harder wearing surface but demands a rigid mortar bed and, where we can, we finish the joints with a permeable jointing compound resin-bound mix that lets water drain through rather than pooling across the surface. Both systems last decades if the groundwork is right. Most failures come down to skipped prep, not the stone itself.
